The multi-cultural musical melting pot that is SXSW Music Festival is right around the corner. What other place in the world gives you access to drink free beer, watch international music acts and meet people from all over the world? This will be my fifth year to attend SXSW and I have become a pro at finding free events to fill my week because, let’s be real, who can actually afford to spend $700+ on one of those badges? Never been to SXSW before? Never fear! I am here to guide you and help you find some cool parties and showcases and make sure you have a good time.
This is a festival in itself that’s been hanging out around SXSW for 7 years that gives over 400 bands and artists the chance to show off their talents in Austin. This year, the festival will take place from Tuesday, March 11 until Saturday, March 15th at over 7 venues up and down 6th street. This is a “no badge required” event and is open to the public, 21 and up. This festival is always home to some great up and coming acts and should definitely make your list of places to stop by at SXSW. Check out http://www.redgorillamusic.com for more details
If you’ve ever been to Austin around SXSW, you have probably heard about festival goers talking about this event. It will take place March 12th through March 15th and this years location and full lineup is yet to be announced, but this is always a huge one. Fader Fort as been around SX for 13 years and has featured artists such as Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Sleigh Bells, Kid Cudi and more. This event is open to badge holders AND the general public through RSVP. The RSVP went live TODAY and usually doesn’t stay up long, so head over to http://www.thefader.com/2014/02/26/the-fader-fort-2014-austinrsvp/ and get yourself set up, while you wait patiently for a killer lineup to be announced 🙂
3.The 2014 Big Picture Media Showcase
This showcase will be held on Friday, March 14th at The Blind Pig, 217 E. 6th street. The party starts at noon and will end around 6pm. Show up early because the Big Picture Media ladies are providing free alcoholic beverages to the early birds! Also, admission is first come first serve with with talent by Driver Friendly, The Lonely Biscuits, NGHBRS and more, don’t want to miss this! There is also a special guest (oooohhhhh) which, if it’s anything like this showcase has been in the past, it will definitely be an act worth waiting for. http://bigpicturemediaonline.com/#top
Although the lineup is still unannounced, I recommend you go ahead and RSVP to this party! Who doesn’t like free alcohol and tacos? That’s what you’ll get at this happenin’ party, along with some great music. The venue will be open March 11th through March 15th and will be held at 505 E. 7th street downtown. This party has been home to Miike Snow, Neon Indian, Alabama Shakes, Miniature Tigers and many more in the past, so I expect the lineup to be spectacular this year. You can attend this event by RSVP’ing and keeping up with the lineup here http://hypem.com/hotel/.
1. The Outdoor Stage at Butler Park
This is probably the coolest thing that you non badge-holders will be able to see all week. Foster the People will be playing a free show on Friday, March 14th and Childish Gambino will also be playing for free on the following Saturday! The times have yet to be announced and this will definitely be a packed event, so I would watch this website like a hawk. Like the previous mentioned events, this one is also free to the public via a SXSW “Guest Pass”. These will be attainable at various retail outlets in Austin, and a limited number of passes will be available at the venue gates. Check out this link for more details! http://sxsw.com/music/shows/butler-park
I really hope this helps narrow your list down of cool events to attend this year at SXSW. This redhead will be there again this year (with a badge this time :p) So make sure to say hello if you see me at one of these events!
Have fun and see you there 🙂
