It was a brisk October night in Los Angeles when Lorde played the first of two sold out shows in the hills at The Greek Theater. The Grammy award winning 17 year old just released her brand new single “Yellow Flicker Beat” – written as part of the self-curated soundtrack for one of the most anticipated films of the year – The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 1. One month shy of turning 18, Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor (Lorde) glided onto the stage in all-black attire underneath a sparkling chandelier. Her innocence was apparent as she stared at the sold-out theater in awe.
“Tennis Court” and “Ribs” had the crowd pleased early in her set. She played a few covers – including “Flashing Lights” by Kanye West and a Bon Iver favorite, “Heavenly Father.” The biggest response of the night was after Ella changed into a beautiful red caped gown to perform the song that won her fame, “Royals”.
It was really only after a fan gave her a rose that she cracked into a huge smile and humbly remarked about feeling shy in front of nearly 6,000 people, and went on a long tangent talking to the audience and thanking them for their support.
Lorde closed out the night with a roaring applause as she played her radio hit single “Team,” and finally an encore which included a track from her latest record – “A World Alone”. Running with friends like Taylor Swift, Lorde definitely is on a fast track to a well deserved success. She puts on a flawless 16 song performance that everyone should experience.
